American Trucking Associations – Capitol Hill
CallisonRTKL combines the past, present and future at this Washington, D.C. office space.
After successful completion of their corporate headquarters in Arlington, VA, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) commissioned CallisonRTKL to provide full architecture and interior renovations for their legislative offices on Capitol Hill. ATA challenged the design team to “knit together” three existing structures—a historic rowhouse (c. 1893), a historic market (c. 1910) and a characterless 1970s office—within a mostly residential Capitol Hill neighborhood of three- and four-story rowhouses dating from the turn of the 20th Century, all to create an efficient, contemporary workplace. The solution was a blend of renovation and historic contextualism that harmonizes comfortably within the neighborhood’s scale and rhymes with the local architectural vernacular.
