Príncipe Pío Station
CallisonRTKL designs an exciting convergence of urban transit and retail in Madrid.
Sited at a critical junction of two subway lines, a regional train line and one of Madrid’s largest bus stations, Príncipe Pío’s design team was challenged to integrate modern retail elements with the existing station while maintaining all transit lines at full operational capabilities. By painstakingly restoring the train station, the designers created a dramatic centerpiece; a glass dome provides an elegant entryway to the 37,000-SM center, allowing visitors to experience upscale shopping in the historic train station, or enjoy films and fine dining in the newly constructed entertainment wing. The result is a retail destination that has attracted a number of UK retailers to the Spanish market for the first time and has enjoyed 100 percent occupancy since its opening.
