Hanoi Red River Urban Development

CallisonRTKL with Arcadis’ socio-economic, water, environmental and infrastructure teams developed an urban waterfront master plan for the Red River in Hanoi.The key project challenge was to limit the flood risks for Hanoi while creating a sustainable and resilient urban development along the river. The project involved the strategic assessment of three flood protection options: a new, conventional dike, a combination of new dike and improvement of existing dikes, and a no-dike, riverbank stabilization option which is designed for flooding. This third, recommended option results in a spacious and eco-friendly river landscape, an attractive urban setting with flood-resilient housing, boulevards, parks, tourist and recreation facilities and a new sustainable urban public transport system.

By maximizing land development opportunities, attracting investment and a diverse population, focusing on high value jobs, creating additional tax revenues for the city and increasing the contribution to the nation’s GDP, investment in the Red River will become a cornerstone of Hanoi’s vision of becoming a world-class city by 2030.
