William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital at UT Southwestern Medical Center
This university system decides to abandon plans for a hospital expansion and start from scratch.
UT Southwestern Medical Center, one of the country’s leading academic medical centers, knew they needed room to grow. In 2007, UTSW purchased St. Paul’s University Hospital with plans to increase their size. After initially beginning as a hospital expansion project, the CallisonRTKL and UTSW team quickly realized that the idea of building a replacement hospital on a nearby 34-acre site was a much better option. The new facility will not only cost the same as expanding the old hospital, but the state-of-the-art design will also allow for future expansion of the hospital’s clinical inpatient facility. The 1.3 million-SF hospital will include 464 beds, 24 operating rooms, a 40-bed emergency department, a helicopter pad and 12 cath/interventional labs. The new design provides a great foundation for this high-profile academic hospital, allowing them to better serve the needs of their patients.
