Port Authority Bus and Train Terminal Competition

A Monument to Movement

Driven by a purposeful, results-oriented design vision and regional compatibility, the Arcadis/CRTKL shortlisted submission for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Bus Terminal design competition outlines a comprehensive plan for sustainable, tech-savvy and efficient transit for the largest bus terminal in the United States and the busiest in the world. The result is a monument to movement; a hyper-functional design that is both elegant and quietly revolutionary.

The team’s ultimate vision was to create an epicenter for urban life and a catalyst for further development with improved linkages to existing and planned trans-Hudson transit facilities. With a focus on structural and operational upgrades, the design utilizes natural ventilation, the relationship between the skin and the structure and internal circulation patterns within the building to create a pleasant commuter experience and an efficient, easily navigable space. The design positions the building well for LEED Gold certification.
