Duty Zero by CDF Hong Kong Airport Duty Free

Journey to the new travel retail.

CallisonRTKL provided full scope interior design services for the recently opened Duty Zero by cdf stores at Hong Kong International Airport. The stores are the result of a collaborative effort between the firm’s Los Angeles and Hong Kong-based design teams and represents a refined, experiential approach to travel retail.

Duty Zero is a collection of shops-within-a-shop featuring varied designs based on product categories resulting in an eclectic, explorative atmosphere. It offers the most comprehensive inventory of duty-free luxury travel brands and the best value in Asia Pacific airports. Shoppers will find cognac, single malt, whiskey, white spirits, the largest collection of Asian liquor, wine, tobacco and local Hong Kong foods spread throughout a total of 11 “experience zones.” These zones are modeled after specific food-and-beverage-centric offerings, including a chateaux wine vault, a whiskey distillery and a Hong Kong High Tea district, complete with an iconic red Hong Kong taxi.

The store features a two-level, sculptural design element that can be seen from afar, as well as a special wine glass showcase that draws the eye as travelers descend on the escalator. Rotating events and promotions at the entrance keep Duty Zero’s programming fresh while well-defined circulation and points of customer service along the way make navigation and the shopping experience seamless. The store also includes a tasting bar known as The Distillery and multiple high-tech touchpoints that leverage virtual reality to facilitate interactive winemaking and wine and food pairing experiences, as well as provide educational content about the history of the products on display.
