Data Center Upgrade

Texas Christian University (TCU) commissioned CRKTL to consolidate multiple existing small data centers on campus into a new, primary data center and to renovate an existing disaster recovery secondary data center with the goals of reducing costs while maximizing value. CRTKL renovated an existing, two-story office building for the primary data center and upgraded the existing secondary data center with state-of-the-art MEP infrastructure.

Texas Christian University (TCU) commissioned CRKTL to consolidate multiple data centers on campus into a new, primary center and to renovate an existing disaster recovery secondary data center. The goal was to reduce cost while maximizing value.

CRTKL renovated an existing, two-story office building for the primary data center and upgraded the existing secondary data center with state-of-the-art MEP infrastructure. The building used for the primary data center lacked interior MEP space; CRTKL used exterior containerized UPS systems, exterior enclosures for switchgear and electrical equipment, and packaged engine generators in sound attenuated enclosures and created an equipment yard, which was challenging due to the limited space and sloping terrain. High efficiency UPS systems were designed with flywheel energy, minimizing electrical losses and provide savings to TCU. The existing building remained fully functioning during the design and installation of MEP systems and kept adjacent central mechanical and electrical plants running without extended outages.

The disaster recovery site consists of an already functioning data center in the basement level of an existing building. CRTKL upgraded and redesigned the existing MEP and fire protection infrastructure with high efficiency systems to minimize the electrical losses and provide savings to TCU.
