“Pop-up space provides an exciting refresh for all types of projects, providing innovative thinking for those interacting with the space and spiking interest of individuals engaging,” says Firth.

CallisonRTKL has worked on prominent pop-up spaces at a global level including experiential retail concepts.

Although a preferred option owing to its cost-effectiveness and innovative offerings, pop-up spaces are evidently faced with certain challenges.

Firth adds: “Transportability is always a key challenge in designing any pop-up space. Pop-ups are often toured frequently between different cities; ensuring that they can be moved effectively is a key concern when designing the space. Pop-ups can be in a space for as little as a week, so ensuring that the space can be disassembled and reassembled, with no additional costs to the operators, is an ever important concern with designing these spaces.”

Incorporation of technology and digital solutions have gained steam in the past year within the construction industry. Pop-up design is no exception and can equally benefit from the incorporation of technology and digital solutions.

Firth insists that it is crucial technology is integrated within and round the pop-up environment, enabling all systems to “talk with one another”, and providing a full offering for users experiencing the pop-up.
