South Sound 911 Takes Another Step Toward a New Public Safety Communications Center

Announcement | April 12, 2019

SEATTLE, WA – April 12, 2019 – South Sound 911 is relocating its primary public safety communications center to a new, three-story steel frame building at 3580 Pacific Avenue South in Tacoma, the former site of the Puget Sound Hospital.

The new location, one full block, will offer a large, unified communications floor to connect law enforcement and fire department call takers and dispatchers. It will also house administrative support, records, a public service lobby, and an emergency operations center. The 72,500 SF facility will include seismic and technology upgrades.

Throughout the design process South Sound 911 staff user groups provided input and participated in charrettes. Neighbors and other members of the public attended community meetings and offered commentary.

In addition to the lead architecture firm CallisonRTKL, the public safety communications center (PSCC) design team includes the owner’s representative Hill International; ADG for communications interiors; KPFF for structural and civil engineering; WSP for mechanical, electrical, lighting, plumbing, and fire protection; TLC for communications technology; the Berger Partnership for landscape architecture; Stantec for acoustics; and Arcadis for cost consulting.

The PSCC project will go out to bid at the end of May 2019. Approximate construction costs are in the range of $40-$43 million. A pre-bid conference is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4 at 1 pm.
