Ribbon Cutting for CallisonRTKL-designed Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Patient Pavilion

Announcement | January 29, 2019

Bryn Mawr, PA—January 29, 2019—CallisonRTKL, the global architecture and design practice, celebrates the official opening of an eight-level, 260,000-SF Patient Pavilion designed to offer patients and families an enhanced experience focused on comfort and healing.

The LEED-registered Pavilion expands and optimizes a full complement of perioperative, OB and clinical services, including a new labor and delivery unit, a 25-bed maternity unit and Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as well as 12 fully equipped, state-of-the-art operating rooms. A community-based orthopedic center of excellence is also a critical part of the program.

“It’s extremely satisfying to help Bryn Mawr Hospital realize their dream,” says CallisonRTKL Senior Vice President Don DeBord. “The Pavilion has been designed with the patient at the center of the equation to respond to the higher demands and expectations of this community.”

Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Patient Pavilion is the centerpiece of a larger modernization of the Main Line Health campus. Construction began in 2016.

“I want to express my deepest and most sincere thanks to every member of the team who was involved in the conception, design, construction and operation of this new building,” said Andrea Gilbert, president, Bryn Mawr Hospital. “Together, we are ensuring that Bryn Mawr Hospital will be here to provide exceptional care for generations to come.”

CRTKL relied on a truly interactive and collaborative approach to the design of the facility, incorporating the direct input of staff and administrators, while using system-wide standards and prototypical room designs previously developed in a partnership with CRTKL and Main Line Health. A mock-up of a patient room was created to enable members of the hospital’s patient and family advisory council as well as clinical and non-clinical staff to “test” the proposed layout and provide feedback. As a result, several important adjustments were made to the design prior to any construction. These small but crucial observations are now a part of the pavilion rooms design, heightening care delivery and patient comfort.

Medical/surgical rooms on the first and second floors are “acuity adaptable,” meaning they can be converted to critical care rooms should the need arise. Two isolation rooms on each floor accommodate patients who must be kept separate from the general patient population because of a particular illness or vulnerability. Other highlights include:

  • Every patient room is single-occupancy with its own private bathroom with vanity, toilet and shower.
  • Room layout maximizes caregiver visibility of patient and patient visibility of natural light.
  • Rooms are organized into three distinct zones—caregiver, patient and family—for infection control practices and privacy.
  • Every room is telemetry-equipped for continuous heart monitoring if needed.
