Maike Centre Wins Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Award of Excellence

Announcement | December 4, 2019

CHICAGO, IL – December 4, 2019 – The CRTKL-designed Maike Centre in Shaanxi, China has won an Award of Excellence from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

Located in the heart of Xi’an’s new High Technology Industry Zone for Xi’an Maike International, the Maike Centre marks the center of this new business district in the southwest part of the city. Adjacent to the Third Ring Road and the future subway line, it provides convenient access to and from any location in the city as well as the airport. Planned as the main headquarter office for the Maike Group and home to the Grand Hyatt Xi’an, the building needed to portray the ambitions of the industry-leading global corporation as well as the atmosphere of modern comfort and hospitality for the international hotel brand.

The design concept began with a vision of creating timeless, place-defining architecture within the historic city of Xi’an. The building’s design is based on three core concepts: to become a celebratory marker for the client and for the new city center, to contribute to the neighborhood by creating a pedestrian-friendly open space network, and to become a vibrant, unique destination. Highlights of the design include the two-level sky bridge featuring a collection of restaurants and entertainment venues, the private dining villas atop the podium overlooking the park and the unique oval-shaped ballroom featuring a glass wall with views of the urban neighborhood.

“This award is a great honor and an opportunity to showcase how our firm’s work for Xi’an, and throughout the world, is helping to transform urban landscapes and heighten the guest experience,” says Clay Markham, CallisonRTKL senior vice president.
