Happy Veteran’s Day from CRTKL

Announcement | November 10, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC – November 11, 2020 – In honor of Veteran’s Day, CRTKL is honoring the veterans it employs and serves by reflecting on some of our most prominent military projects. We are deeply proud to design spaces for those who have bravely served our country and provide the Veteran community with the care, rest and holistic health management to grow even stronger.

San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC)

“One of our highest callings as architects and designers is to create healing environments for those who defend our nation and our democratic values around the world. SAMMC represents a high mark for all of us who collaborated on its design, and we are humbled to know that the lives of our soldiers and their families are made better by the work that we do.” – Eurico Francisco, Vice President at CRTKL

The implementation of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) legislation led to a significant addition and renovation project for the Brooke Army Medical Center– transforming it into the SAMMC campus. It is now a leading center for inpatient and ambulatory care: consisting of a Level 1 Trauma Center and the Defense Department’s only American Burn Association-verified burn center. The new one million-SF project includes a rehabilitation clinic, expanded operating room capabilities, a new emergency department, and a new patient bed tower. Upon completion, it was named the largest military medical facility.

Ft. Knox

“It was our privilege to design a modern healthcare ‘home’ for the Ireland Army Medical Clinic community. Our team was so thoughtful about incorporating interior and exterior design elements to honor the decades of excellent patient care to those who serve, and their families, at Fort Knox.” – Dana Brandle, Senior Associate Vice President

CallisonRTKL designed a new clinic to replace the aging Ireland Army Community Hospital after it no longer served the needs of the Fort Knox, Ky. training base. The 101,373-SF Ireland Army Health Clinic is wholly patient-centered, providing outpatient services with improved quality and increased efficiency. With future flexibility inherent in planning, the new clinic is well-equipped to provide quality care for many years to come.

Fort Knox’s transition from active duty to a training base resulted in a population drop. As a result, the Ireland Army Community Hospital was out of scale for the surrounding community’s needs. CallisonRTKL designed a replacement clinic that was more efficient in size, modern in function and aesthetic and addressed the immediate needs of patients and staff. The new facility includes spaces for physical therapy, primary and specialty care clinics, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, and mental health outpatient services. Nearby local hospitals offer inpatient and emergency treatment.

Key design goals for the clinic included: creating a patient and family-centered environment, improving the quality and safety of health care delivery, supporting the care of the whole person through connections with nature, developing a positive work environment, and designing for maximum standardization and future flexibility and growth.

Veteran’s Affairs Las Vegas Medical Center

“As an Air Force Veteran, I am honored to work on projects that help those who serve and have served. The VA Las Vegas project falls in the latter category. Historically, design overlooked women-centric Veteran care spaces. This facility not only includes a Women’s Health Center, but other specialized areas like Eye Clinic, Specialty Care, Dental, Radiology, Pulmonary, Prosthetics, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Mental Health, Oncology, and other services. Along with the Veteran population in Las Vegas, the hospital serves patients from Utah, California, and Arizona.

Working on VA Las Vegas was fulfilling on a personal and professional level. It has added to my sense of accomplishment, knowing that although I am no longer serving in an active capacity, my work as a Medical Equipment Planner has allowed me to continue to serve with, and for, my fellow Veterans; a legacy I am proud to be a part of.” – LeNora Devine, Associate Vice President

After almost a decade of design, construction and budget deliberations, Veterans Affairs Las Vegas became the first new Veterans Administration medical facility since 1995. CallisonRTKL worked in conjunction with JMA Architecture Studios to create this state-of-the-art facility with room for expansion. The campus features an inpatient medical center, ambulatory care building, a general services building, a central plant and a nursing home. From component planning to interior design, the entire campus focuses on improving outcomes while providing a more holistic approach to treating our veterans.
