No Planet B: Designing A More Resilient Future

Resilience is an expanding theme in today’s world. Having been made acutely aware of the fragility of our cities, economies, and people, attention now turns to safe-guarding and future-proofing. What this looks like in the context of the built environment, how it is achieved and the effect this has on health and well-being, is the focus of this session. Here, we question the current modus operandi of our cities and go back to the drawing board to determine what a truly resilient urban system looks like in reality. It will look at increasing capacity for recovery, mechanisms for withstanding crisis and adapting to change, while also previewing the Resiliency Accelerator Index™ – a bespoke diagnostic tool informed by CRTKL’s key factors that assesses and grades the ability to be resilient.

Stop Building Organizations for the 19th Century

The systems developed to organize the workforce in the early industrial 19th century are woven into the fabric of nearly everything we do today, propagating standardization over creativity and human potential. It all starts when we first go to school. And then, this standardization is perpetuated into the way our corporations, brands, and agencies are organized. It is pervasive in how we work, the tools we use, as well as the buildings and cities we inhabit. So, how can we re-invest our energy into our creative culture and maximize the output and quality of the things people can do together? How can we organize ourselves for the future in a postindustrial workplace? This session will explore what’s needed in order to put the emphasis back where it belongs—on human potential.

Featured Speaker: Paul Conder, Vice President & Global Services Lead, Customer Experience, CallisonRTKL

Creating Happiness in the Workplace Through Design

We are living in times that represent the most substantive change in centuries, yet we find ourselves facing record-breaking rates of depression. Over 300 million people suffer from depression globally, and mental health costs are expected to hit $6 trillion by 2030. As we transition back into workplace, hospitality, healthcare, residential, and retail environments, we must ensure that our human needs are met: connection, empathy, freedom, well-being, and happiness. This session will explore how happiness can be prioritized through design. The session also aims at unearthing The Happiness Ecosystem Index (HEI)—an index created by CRTKL that is based on the sciences of happiness and design, and includes five principles of happiness: meaning, vitality, freedom, engagement, and delight.
