CallisonRTKL Redesign of Gymboree Store in Torrance, CA Opens

Announcement | July 10, 2018

SEATTLE, WA – July 10, 2018 – CallisonRTKL is pleased to announce the opening of the redesigned Gymboree store at Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance, California. The firm’s Seattle/San Francisco specialty retail team conceived of an imaginative new strategy for repositioning the store as an experiential and accommodating space for children and their parents to learn, play and explore.

“The first step was to align with the Gymboree brand and ensure the store design felt relevant to its customers, both existing and new,” said John Walton, Vice President in CallisonRTKL’s San Francisco office. “Shopping with kids can be challenging, so the goal was to make the experience comfortable, clear and consistent while providing unexpected, fun activities, creating a balanced offering and allowing parents to really focus and enjoy time with their kids.”

Mosaic entry flooring greets shoppers at the door with the words “Hey. Hi. Hello.” The storefront features pin-mounted backlit signage and an open-frame concept with a metal-framed, vitrine-inspired glass façade and large pivot doors.

One of the design’s key features is a central communal table that combines product display, a work surface where shoppers can assemble outfits, cubby storage and a kids’ play table. A hanging rail at 9′ AFF to showcase merchandise above the community table.

“We focused on using real, honest materials assembled with utilitarian but artful details to serve as the backdrop to a curated, well-organized array of outfit building blocks,” said Jeany Kim, Senior Associate Vice President. “We created intentional moments for play and discovery to activate the customer journey.”

The store has its share of Instagrammable moments, such as a giant LED rainbow and oversized ruler. An interactive peg board provides a space for Gymboree’s youngest customers to play, and giant marquee signs are used as wayfinding and to display messages throughout the store.

“We wanted to make shopping fun for both kids and parents,” explains Walton. “And on the brand side, we wanted to build capacity for customer engagement by creating a space that could play host to special events, programming and collaboration for the Gymboree community.”
