LONDON – May 20, 2019 – The Chadstone Shopping Centre has won ICSC’s 2019 VIVA (Vision, Innovation, Value, Achievement) Best-of-the-Best Award for the CallisonRTKL-designed $660 million expansion and renovation. VIVA honors the most outstanding examples of shopping center design and development, sustainability, marketing and community service worldwide.
The Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne is the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere with a 56-year history as one of Australia’s top retail destinations. Working in partnership with Vicinity Centres and the Gandel Group, and serving as project designer with The Buchan Group as executive architect, CallisonRTKL devised the design for additional space to new retailers and entertainment offerings. Additionally, the design included a Legoland amusement centre and a new grid shell roof.
Chadstone Shopping Centre has been a long-time staple of CallisonRTKL’s award-winning retail portfolio. The firm initially engaged with the centre in 1988 on the design of a 52,000-square meter addition and played an integral role in more recent stages of development and expansion, including the addition of Chadstone Place in 2008 and Chadstone West Mall in 2009. Throughout that time, CallisonRTKL and The Buchan Group have worked in partnership.

This is the first year that the VIVA has been awarded to two projects. In addition to CRTKL’s Chadstone project, the other VIVA winner is Docks Bruxsel in Brussels, Belgium.
In the first 10 years of the VIVA Best-of-the-Best Award, CallisonRTKL has won three times. In addition to Chadstone’s current award, in 2017, the firm, in partnership with Macerich, was an award finalist for the Tyson’s Corner Center project. It was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to amplify the success of Tysons Corner Center regional mall by master-planning one of America’s signature new mixed-use communities. The firm’s work on the City Creek Center located in Salt Lake City, Utah, won the ICSC Best-of-the-Best Award in the Sustainable Design/Development category for 2014 and the Westfield San Francisco Centre won the Best-of-the-Best award in 2009.
