CallisonRTKL-designed expansion and renovation of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital Opens

Announcement | February 4, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 4, 2018 – CallisonRTKL, the global architecture and design practice, celebrates the official opening of a major component of the renovation and expansion of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. The occasion was marked on January 17 by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by hospital staff and community leaders.

The new facility virtually doubles the hospital’s capacity while encouraging deeper connections to the communities of the Middle Peninsula and expanding healthcare opportunities in the rural areas of Virginia.

“Our goal was to create a new central hub for the hospital, fostering a refreshed and more approachable identity within the community,” said CallisonRTKL Vice President, Ray Brower. “Throughout we balanced the operational needs of the practitioners with a true commitment to patient experience. Overall, this phase makes a big step toward an updated and integrated campus as well as a reinvigorated approach to the patient experience, future flexibility and cost-effectiveness.”

The new two-story Patient Care Wing increases the hospital’s ability to provide comprehensive patient care. It includes a full surgical suite with three operating rooms, two large procedure rooms, seven “pre-op” rooms for patients preparing to go into surgery and a larger recovery area with 13 post-surgery patient bays.

A new front door—the Main Entrance Pavilion—re-establishes Riverside Walter Reed Hospital’s identity while creating a focal point for the campus, linking existing elements and simplifying wayfinding.

The emergency department has been expanded from 11 to 18 treatment rooms, including a trauma room and three cardiac rooms, four patient observation rooms, two triage rooms and a secure hold room for behavioral health patients.

CRTKL’s interior designer team worked closely with hospital staff to create a hospitality-like environment that encourages wellness and reduces stressors. The design emphasizes the role of the family to the patient experience. Private patient rooms for general medical and surgical patients include bathrooms and showers, sleeper sofas and recliners, allowing for longer and more comfortable family visits.

CallisonRTKL provided planning, architecture and interior design, move logistics and technology consulting services for the renovation and expansion. The firm has also worked closely with Riverside Health System designing two other community hospitals, Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg and Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital.
