CallisonRTKL appoints Mark Slocombe director of Manchester office

Announcement | February 20, 2018

Appointment reflects global design firm’s ongoing commitment to growth in the UK’s northern regions

CallisonRTKL has appointed Mark Slocombe as the first director of its Manchester office. Since opening the office in 2016, the global architecture and planning practice has designed numerous residential projects for clients like Manchester Life and Select Property Group, in addition to co-authoring the Manchester Residential Quality Guidance. The appointment of Slocombe reflects the firm’s continued commitment to Manchester and the Northern Powerhouse.

Todd Lundgren, CallisonRTKL executive director, said:

“Mark’s appointment comes at an exciting time for CallisonRTKL in Manchester. Over the past two years, we have had great success building relationships with key clients, and this success has shown us that Manchester welcomes our global expertise translated through local knowledge of the city’s distinctive geography and culture. Mark brings a deep understanding of the region to our practice and will help us to continue to grow and expand our presence in and around Manchester.”

Slocombe, who led the Manchester office of Dutch firm Mecanoo prior to joining CallisonRTKL, has lived and worked in Manchester for 20 years. While at Mecanoo, he led the design of the University of Manchester’s £300m Engineering Campus Development and has a portfolio of experience that includes education, commercial and retail projects across northern England.

Slocombe said:

“CallisonRTKL has already established itself in Manchester as a designer of buildings that both look beautiful and solve problems for their clients and the city. It’s this mix of creativity and pragmatism, as well as a blend of global and local knowledge, that makes CallisonRTKL stand out. I look forward to helping them to broaden their reach and build great relationships in the region.”

CallisonRTKL, which operates across North America, in Berlin and in several locations in the Middle East and Asia, opened its doors in London in 1990. Since setting up in Manchester two years ago, CallisonRTKL was instrumental in creating the much-lauded and award-winning Manchester Residential Quality Guidance, which it co-authored with Deloitte and Planit-IE for Manchester City Council.

CallisonRTKL was also responsible for the design of Manchester’s now-complete Cotton Field Wharf, the city’s first purpose-built build-to-rent scheme. Recently, CallisonRTKL received planning permission for three build-to-let schemes with units totaling 1,340: First Street and Lampwick for Manchester Life, and Embankment West for Select Property Group. All three projects will break ground in 2018.
