The ambitious redevelopment of San Francisco’s landmark Emporium Building has evolved into one the most significant urban mixed-use projects in the United States. Westfield San Francisco Centre merges the site of the old Emporium Building and its Beaux-Arts grand façade and glass dome with the adjacent San Francisco Shopping Centre. After adding nearly one million square feet, the development forms the largest urban shopping center west of the Mississippi, occupied by both Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom’s second largest grossing locations nationwide. Its location next to the city’s busiest BART station links the heart-and-soul of San Francisco’s fashion district with Yerba Buena, the core of the city’s cultural district, which contributes to the center’s 25 million annual shoppers.
