BALTIMORE, Md. – September 4, 2020 – Tim Twomey, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for CallisonRTKL, and former General Counsel of RTKL Associates Inc., has announced that he will retire on October 2nd after a tenure of more than a decade with the company and a total of over 43 years in the profession. As an architect and attorney, Tim’s lifetime of work has touched virtually every professional architect in the United States. His passionate pursuit of developing clear, standard contracts and evaluating alternate methods of project delivery through his work with others on the AIA Documents Committee and the AIA Risk Committee have resulted in documents now considered to be the essential legal underpinnings of nearly every standard architectural agreement in the country. Tim is also dedicated to educating and promoting the next generation of architects, authoring articles and textbooks, and fostering his commitment to teaching and mentorship. He continues as a lecturer in professional practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
“Tim’s influence on CallisonRTKL and the architecture community cannot be overstated,” begins Robyn Miller, current General Counsel for CRTKL. “Internally, he has guided our project teams on all of our residential condominium and healthcare projects and overseen our work in the UK and Middle East. Externally, anyone who has ever used an AIA document has seen the results of Tim’s work. We will miss Tim’s easy manner, wise guidance, and willingness to jump into anything, but are fortunate to be able to continue to benefit from his legacy.”
“Just another case of a highly successful fellow Trojan!” says Daun St. Amand, Senior Vice President at CRTKL. “Tim’s unique skills as an attorney and architect, Fellow of the AIA, positioned our residential practice to take on typologies (i.e. condos, stick frame construction) that we were not able to do under prior leadership. Tim found ways to mitigate risks and at the same time provide convincing negotiations with reluctant clients. His efforts have allowed CRTKL to participate with high profile projects such as Four Seasons, Perla and Oceanwide– legacy projects that will pay dividends well into the future. We will miss Tim’s good nature and leadership. Fight on, Tim!”
“Tim’s influence in the industry is so easy to see. His work with the AIA Committees allowed the entire industry to modernize their approach to partnering with clients and contracting. His achievements in helping to define alternative means of project delivery and contracts are the essential foundation of almost all architectural agreements. He has graciously served the firm in many roles, most recently as our Deputy General Counsel,” says Kelly Farrell, President and CEO of CRTKL. “Tim’s commitment to advancing the practice is only paralleled with his commitment to advancing the next generation of architects. His achievements as an educator stretch far outside our walls. Personally, I will be eternally thankful for Tim’s belief in educating the profession; he’s helped us all become better negotiators, partners and better able to sculpt the future of the AEC industry.”
