The New is a regeneration of an urban plaza and an underground commercial space, a small project of larger issues in urban renewal. With an institutional approach to commercial architecture that focuses on public place-making, the design reunites once divided urban and commercial spaces by breaking physical and conceptual demarcation of the ground and merging public realm with commercial spaces. Nested in lush landscape, the hidden destination carries metaphoric references to Chinese ideas and the site’s history to ensure that the resurrected place is aesthetically distinctive and contextually adaptive.
