CallisonRTKL-designed Wai Kai Breaks Project Ground in Hawaii

Announcement | February 4, 2021

CallisonRTKL-designed Wai Kai– a waterfront retail, dining and entertainment destination from Haseko Development– broke ground at Hoakalei Resort on the island of Oahu in January. The project will include approximately 32,000-square-feet of retail and a one-of-a-kind Waterfront Recreational Facility featuring the world’s largest man-made wave pool.

Visitors of Wai Kai will have various opportunities to connect to water through direct access to the Wai Kai lagoon and the Waterfront Recreational Facility. This unique entertainment venue’s wave pool will reach 100-feet wide and allow surfers of all skill levels to test their surfing and recreational abilities. Other amenities in this complex include a two-story restaurant, a boutique apparel shop and luxurious lounges that overlook the wave pool.

“Our lives are already hectic,” says CallisonRTKL Vice President Michael Lee. “So much of our day is made up of running errands and driving from place to place. The opportunity to shop, dine and spend time on the water, all in one place, is a luxury, but it doesn’t have to be. Wai Kai makes it possible.”

Wai Kai’s retail environment is designed to cater to everyone from local residents to international and domestic visitors from around the world. This new destination will be nothing short of amazing for the island of Oahu and will redefine the standard of lifestyle and experiential retail in Hawaii. Construction of Wai Kai is expected to be completed in 2022.
