Design Strategy

Cool Roof

Cool roofs are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. A roof with a higher solar reflectance reduces heat transfer to the building while a higher thermal emittance releases absorbed heat back to the sky. Cool roofs reduce both building cooling loads and the urban heat island effect. They reduce energy consumption by decreasing air conditioning needs, improve indoor comfort for spaces that are not air conditioned. Decreasing roof temperature, may also extend roof service life. Cool roofs are recommended in hot climates and climates with hot summers.
