U.S. Capitol Visitor Center (CVC)

CallisonRTKL modernizes one of the nation’s most important buildings.

This unprecedented project required an all-hands-on-deck effort from the entire CallisonRTKL project team. As the largest addition to the Capitol in its 215-year history, the facility is located beneath the East Plaza of the Capitol grounds laid out in 1872 by Frederick Law Olmsted. It was designed to accommodate approximately 4,500 visitors, while preserving the historic appearance of the Capitol and retaining the original Olmstead landscape plan. The goal was to create a facility that enhances the visitor reception experience, strengthens building security, and preserves an atmosphere of free public access. Given its size, scope and location, the CVC is one of the most complex projects in CallisonRTKL’s portfolio. The project team rose to the challenge, proving their ability to work within the context of the country’s most historic and recognizable buildings.
