Sidney Yates Building, Washington, DC

CallisonRTKL designs an update for a historic government building.

Originally constructed in the late 1800s to house the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Sidney Yates Federal Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now home to the USDA Forest Service. CallisonRTKL served as the architect of record for this 180,000-SF, Grunley Construction-led, design-build modernization and consolidation project. As part of GSA’s nationwide effort to reduce their real estate footprint, the renovated Yates building increases the building’s occupancy from 340 to more than 500 employees. Challenged by an extremely aggressive schedule, the team successfully completed design in just nine weeks with construction completed in seven months. The modernization included complete systems upgrades including new mechanical, electrical, HVAC and fire protection systems. A new entryway, as well as new conferencing areas, were also included in the final design.
