Embarcadero Center

A San Francisco landmark gets a new image that celebrates the past and the future.

Despite being an example of progressive urban development since the early 1980s, the Embarcadero Center was in need of a solidified pedestrian experience and an overall rejuvenation. Rather than destroying the architecture as other firms advised, CallisonRTKL’s team opted for a more sustainable approach, embracing and repositioning the center’s architecture. On a practical level, this approach reduces material waste, but it also challenged the designers to find the virtue in the existing structure and pay tribute to its status as a San Francisco landmark. Ahead of current trends, the team is integrating a digital program that will not only pull Embarcadero Center into the 21st Century, but will make it easier to organize and advertise neighborhood events and connect the center to the wider community.
